I have been creating art in a variety of mediums all my life. In 2000, I began working in mosaic. A compulsive recycler, I seek out ways to salvage materials for all of my artwork. All individual mosaics are made from scrap glass discarded by stained glass students. I cut each piece individually, creating a new design that sparkles with a luminescent quality. I often work on commission, creating custom pieces to enhance the colors and themes of homes and businesses. Glass-on-glass mosaics can be hung in a window or lit from within. These pieces are particularly stunning. Please see my website for more information: http://www.jkmosaiccom....

| Your Personal Biography |
I grew up in Michigan and moved to Washington in 1988 to attend The Evergreen State College where I studied art, culture, religion and women's studies. After graduation, I co-owned a small restaurant for 2 years, then spent the remainder of my 20s mainly working in child advocacy while creating and selling artwork as a hobby. I have worked in ceramics, oil pastels, linocuts, collage, fabric, and wire jewelry, but I discovered mosaic in 2000, and I became addicted. At age 33 I was working part time doing marketing for performing arts when I had my daughter. Finding the return to work extremely complicated, and with a couple of commissions under my belt, I decided to focus on art as an income generator. Enterprise for Equity helped me to write a business plan that gave me a realistic goal. I was chosen as the featured artist for a local arts festival in 2007, which generated 14 commissions in the first year. In the following years, I have continued to learn and apply advanced mosaic techniques, and have been hired to install interior and exterior mosaic treatments in homes, businesses and a school. Between commissions, I sell my fine art mosaic panels at art shows, in galleries and online. Becoming a working artist allows me to live remotely, be available for my growing daughter, tend a huge vegetable garden, and care for our dogs, cat, goats, chickens, turkeys, a duck and a rabbit. It is also very important to me to stress that I use almost reclaimed materials almost exclusively, especially for my art panels. It takes far more work, time and ingenuity than simply purchasing what I need, but environmental sustainability is one of my core values. |
