Artist Statement:
It strikes me while looking at a classic Berenice Abbot photograph: Seventh Avenue looking south from 35th Street, that as an art photographer, I have been influenced by everything. I have hardly seen the work, but I know it well. Just as well from a friend's snapshot down a ...

| Your Personal Biography |
Jesse Ross seriously began making pictures around 1997. He is self taught, aided and inspired by the thoughts and works of visionaries since the dawn of history.
Ross has spent the past decade in residencies throughout Europe in preparation of a long and promising art photography career, listing Berlin, Budapest, Barcelona, Prague, Cesky Krumlov, Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Opatija, Mostar and Sarajevo among countless other points between as home.
Ross worked exclusively in black and white and traditional darkroom printmaking from ca. 1997-2001. During this time Ross focused his attention between two major themes. The first centered on geometric abstraction and grayscale tonality while the second explored higher keyed sub/urban still lifes and landscapes.
These themes persisted stylistically unchanged until 2006 when Ross began a new vein of color photography works which departed from straight narrative to become a new pictorial; a painterly and expressionist photography style which discourses with and continues to expand on those original themes.
Just recently Ross has been interested in revisiting black and white composition and has produced two major series of work, both abstract in nature. The first is the well publicized Tables and Chairs Shadows, Starbucks.., the second is an expansive series of plant shadows abstract studies loosely called the Garden Shadows Series. This series was begun with original installments of palms shadows in Opatija in 2006 and has since grown to encompass ferns shadows, grasses shadows, and various leaves and branches shadows.
Jesse Ross has exhibited worldwide with his first Stateside exhibitions at the Tacoma City Hall Gallery and at Tacoma's Art at Work - Art Slam in 2008. In 2007 a series of photographs made in Sarajevo were accepted into the Bosnian National and University Library in connection with the National Gallery. To begin 2009 Ross will enjoy inclusion in The Bellingham Review's Winter/Spring issue. Look for future exhibitions to be announced. |
