Artist Statement for Jesse Ross

It strikes me while looking at a classic Berenice Abbot photograph: Seventh Avenue looking south from 35th Street, that as an art photographer, I have been influenced by everything. I have hardly seen the work, but I know it well. Just as well from a friend's snapshot down a Budapest street in the early morning sunlight which was probably styled after something influenced initially by Berenice Abbot. Who was herself influenced by someone else.
That is how influence goes. And why there is probably nothing new under the sun. Just some things are fresher. And as contemporary artists we should simply be more aware of this than the "common folk" stuck in its rut. We are the ones that we all depend on to find new ways of seeing that which is known but forgotten.
