Artist Statement for Neil Borrell

With pen and ink Neil Borrell produces finely detailed country and nautical scenes that are rich in texture and character. His drawings have been published in The New Yorker, and the Martha’s Vineyard Gazette. His limited edition prints have been featured at the Wellfleet Collection and the Swansborough Gallery in Wellfleet, the Cape Cod town that has inspired much of his work, as well as at the MAC 21 Annual International Art Fair in Malaga each year since its inception in 1999.

In New York, Borrell’s drawings were the subject of a one-man show, “Fishing Ports in Pen and Ink”, at the South Street Seaport Museum, and have also been featured in exhibits at Lincoln Center, The Hudson Guild, Bank Street College and the Educational Alliance.

Neil’s pursuit of subjects has taken him to France, Mallorca, Portugal, England and Wales, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and Cape Cod.

An exception to the fishing ports and rural villages that characterize most of Borrell’s work. Paris remains his favorite locale, perhaps because his artistic career began in earnest there in the spring of 1969 with a drawing inspired by an elaborate wooden door across the boulevard from his hotel café Neil’s work has grown in complexity and discipline since then.
