Artist Statement for Hans Borgonjon

The ineffable phenomenal part of our experiences is one of the few things we truly own. What it is like to see a blue sky, taste coffee or wine is very difficult if not impossible to communicate.

The subjectivity of our experiences is, in my opinion, one of the foundation stones of the self. That is why I find it so important to increase awareness of it in this world of encroaching second-hand impressions and ever growing superficiality.

By removing the hooks that make it all too easy to make conditioned suppositions of what our senses communicate. I want to increase this subjective awareness by creating tensions through contrasts and ambiguities within my objects:

Familiarity & Alienation
Organic & Formal
Simple & Complex
Normal & Abnormal
Traditional & New
Individual & Universal

The common shape of the cylinder forms the basis of my work. By deconstructing and reconstructing this form I keep on challenging a traditional view of this familiar object.

I reposition the object in a 3-dimensional space.
I enlarge the form to an almost human scale.
I occupy the walls of the cylinder with a structure that simultaneously divides and supports. This structure starts to inhabit the contained space instead of the container.
On their own the structures form abstract sculptures. Together they can reform the original cylindrical shape.
The strong use of titles contributes to the sense of ambiguity and adds different levels of meaning and nuances to the objects.
