Artist Statement:
As a Florida native, I have grown up loving and living in the outdoors, so it is no suprise that plein air landscape paintings are my passion. Watching how the Florida sun transforms the world as it moves across the sky is a constant joy, and trying to capture it in paint is a constant challenge. Like the impressionists who inspire me, I work in layers of oil, wet over dry. Many visits to the same location at the same time of day are necessary to complete a painting. This allows an intimacy with the location and helps to create a sense of place in the finished piece. I use the intensity of color to excite or relax the eye, deepened shadows to create an air of mystery and timelessness, and soft edges to show atmosphere. Close-cropped views allow the viewer to share the same intimacy that I feel when I paint. Although my goals are mainly artistic, I am also aware that I am recording a rapidly vanishing time and place as more and more of the land is developed. It is my hope that my paintings will also create a desire to conserve and protect the wild ...

| Biggest Artistic Inspiration |
I have always been an artist. I am inspired by the tradition of painting “en plein air”. Although I have had some formal art training, my most profound teacher has been nature itself. My artistic heroes are the early California Impressionists and the continuing American tradition of painting on location. I am inspired by the way the sun changes the world as it moves across the sky. One minute dark, moody and mysterious and the next minute reveled in it’s colorful glory. Painting directly from nature and observing the effects of light, weather and season on the landscape allows me constantly changing possibilities for artistic expression. There is never a dull moment out in nature! |

THIS AWARD-WINNING OIL PAINTER is noted for her clean use of color, powerful compositions and her ability to capture the scene before her with an authentic sense of place. A passionate conservationist, she has been selected by jury as Artist-In-Residence at State parks in Florida, South Carolina and Georgia and her artwork is included in their permanent collections. Brenda’s oil paintings have been juried into numerous international, national, and regional competitions and are included in corporate and museum collections.
