Artist Statement:
Jane Denman is based in England and is a practising artist and tutor. Her drawings, which are an important basis for paintings, are based on the infamous Paul Klee quote ‘taking the line for a walk’.
Using a very fine drawing pen Jane her aim is to create a fluid, connected drawing at speed, aiming to create a drawing in a matter of minutes before the subject (often figurative) has moved. The challenge in trying to capture the image, as a camera would do, is one that often fails but every so often there is just time to get it right.
Jane has exhibited her work in London and the south east of England, she is happy to work to commissions and is currently working on large scale drawings and prints.

I love languages, I speak German and would love to learn Italian and one day have a house swap in Italy. I am a keen gardener, growing things from seed is my thing, cycling and yoga. I am interested in networking with others that love drawing with pen, illustration, fashion illustration, working with oil and painting. |

| Biggest Artistic Inspiration |
Inspiration for me very often comes from seeing drawing and paintings by great masters such as Titian, Vuillard, Matisse and one of my favourites, Picasso.
Drawing and setting myself challenges, such as drawing without looking at the paper, with my left hand. Seeing other people draw is also wonderful. |

| Why Did You Become An Artist |
I started drawing when I was very young, I was inspired by my father who was an architect and he had some fabulous Rotring ink pens with which he demonstrated how to literally build a house with. |

| Your Personal Biography |
Drawing is my passion. My earliest creative practice began with the line, and my present work continues to explore the possibilities of the pen within painting. Whereas most traditional practices use drawing as a starting point to be painted over, my paintings maintain the lines prominence. Drawing from such influences as Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, R B Kitaj and Japanese prints, my paintings fuse line and pure colour in order to convey the immediacy of the sketch. For me, the sketch, which records in ink ones initial visual experience, remains the purest encounter in artistic practice. By refusing to reduce the sketch to a mere stage in a paintings creation, I hope to blur the boundaries between painting and drawing, and broaden our conventional understanding of both practices.
