Artist Statement:
My acrylic canvases are a product of having run through all media and now settling on canvas. They seem to suit my need for color, line, shape, and composition and a wee bit of realism (semi-abstract).
Mostly, these canvases are developed by subtraction and then addition, but by no means do they satisfy me until the color is complete and the values are simpatico. It is the value of color as well as color that makes these canvases work. Also notice the ground. Without a proper beginning feeling the painting can’t proceed.
I have lived in the North Carolina mountains for 25 years and the shapes of the farm patches on the side of a mountain never cease to amaze me. I paint those shapes time and time again, but always differently. Mountain and flower garden shapes are very closely related. So, when I start a painting I put down line which always develops into shapes on the canvas. The shapes may be a garden in full bloom or mountain forms or just an abstraction, but my basic organic feeling is always there.
