Artist Statement:
Vernacular culture surrounds us but is little noted. When it is noted, it is not placed on the same level as �high� culture. Perhaps its ephemeral nature confines its importance. But, despite this, it has more impact on our daily lives.
Photographers were among the first to recognize the importance of vernacular culture: it is the source of their best work. The camera made it possible to record the vernacular in exquisite detail. And the detail is the message.

A. Paul Cartier
Biography
Paul has been working as a professional photographer for thirty years, and as an educator for over 10 years. He has long specialized in illustrative photography with an educational slant – in print, multi-media and on the web. He has displayed his personal work for over thirty years, in a variety of venues: from local cafes to San Francisco City Hall; internationally and on the Web. With more than ten years of working with diverse populations, he has served children pre-K-12 in hospitals, schools and museums. He has worked with numerous non-profits including Shriner's Hospital, ArtSpan, Mother Jones magazine, Living library, Root Division, On Lok, 826 Valencia, Asian Art Museum and the University of San Francisco.
He currently teaches classes at the Finn Center in Mountain View, CA.
