Artist Statement for Carolyn Sheltraw

Although I have painted many other subjects most of my artwork contain architecture. In three years I have created nearly fifty paintings of buildings. I am attracted to the geometric aspects of these structures. When light hits them they can create some dramatic cast shadows. I am particularly drawn to buildings that are large and have architectural decoration. In my paintings, I create the towering effect of the buildings. Instead of standing back and painting the entire building I prefer to come up close and paint only a section of the building. My preferred view is the snapshot perspective of looking up toward the sky. I got this idea from photographs my parents snapped of Italian churches. Their photos depict only sections of the enormous churches. Therefore, I take photographs of buildings in the same method. Using these photographs as reference I paint the dramatic and powerful view of the buildings. Overall, churches tend to be my favorite type of building to paint because they are usually huge and dramatic.
