Artist Statement:
My paintings are almost never purely representational, but this series is quite different.....
Though right now the abundance around us seems staggering, what I try to depict is the awesome beauty of food that is fast disappearing.
This style for me, best expresses what I want to convey about food.
In part representational/part abstract images, food is portrayed with powerful energy, and sweeping vibrant colour.
There are many levels here.
The glorification of food, the tension between the colours, the significance of the line work, the surreal power of the images.....
The lines and shapes that surround each fruit are very deliberate, and each stroke of paint is purposeful....here is all of nature, the land, the seasons, water, the sky, with food as the heart of it all.
I feel very strongly that to connect with the viewer, the work should look rich and full of life........ as we prepare meals and shop for food, we hold in our hands every shape and texture that nature provides......food is indeed glorious....I paint it as a celebration of life and a reminder of it’s fragility.
