About the Artist
I started drawing and painting as a way to deal with stress. To deal with my anger issues
The first drawings + paintings I created were very dark- very angry…. Actually I guess some of the new ones are too… hmm…
well anyway- this hobby of mine has developed into something much more important to me than I ever thought it would..a sort of therapy…..
Regarding this series of paintings
I’m fascinated by large cities, their energy, their mysteries and their color. What’s around this corner? What’s down that street? Who lives there?? Little toy boxes stacked together and apart to form these colossal urban centers with so much confusion and so much life. Each of these little boxes houses a story in itself.
I guess in a way cities sort of represent our journey through life.
You have to decide which roads to drive down, which streets are safe for you to travel as an individual and most importantly, where should you place your little square box in the pile with the others?
This is what I paint, little square boxes. Every painting starts the same way- with one little box on the ...

| Biggest Artistic Inspiration |
The people who piss me off on a daily basis with their stupid, inane catering questions like "why is it so expensive?, can I have a deal? and is this your best price?. I mean, what are we negotiating for? a camel?
People like this make me want to paint |

| Your Personal Biography |
The Bio of Christopher J Hrynyk- such as it is…..
I was born and raised in Edmonton in a household where artistic expression was encouraged- at least by my Mom. She’s to blame for my appreciation of art, literature and (as my Dad would say) anything vaguely “cultural”. She was - and still is an artist (If you meet her be sure to ask about a painting I like to call “Green Stonehenge”). She taught me that being creative wasn’t a bad thing or something to hide. UNTIL I turned 13 and it all came to a screeching halt… I knew everything there was to know about everything and ART was not cool!
So I trundled through my early adult life through a series of schools and part time “Mcjobs” until I was forced to decide what to do with the rest of my life. So I decided to become a Chef.
Now let me tell you - I had always loved good food but I didn’t think I’d cook for a living. I was supposed to be a lawyer! It’s bloody hard work! The hours were long and stressful, the pay (early on) sucked , some of the people you work with are petty criminals or downright degenerates……..
Strangely though I’ve loved almost every minute of it. I loved it so much that it sort of took over my life. Food is a bit of an obsession for me.
Painting happened to me in much the same way my cooking career did- it just sort of happened.
Two years ago, my partner of 16 years had been pressuring me to find a hobby. Something that I enjoyed doing that would take my mind off of work and help me to relax. Initially I came up with a few bright ideas that amounted to nothing, until one day, as I was walking though an art supply store (buying something for Christmas) it occurred to me that I did at one time like to paint. So I thought I’d give it another try and to my amazement the kid that loved art was still in there. Only now he was more mature + and had a lot to say
I have no formal education in the art of painting save what my Mom and Virginia Park arts core Elementary School taught me. However, I believe that my training as a Chef as well as the travelling I’ve done have given me an eye for detail and a weird, unique perspective on the world around me. This “weirdness” is a part of me and much like the food that I create it’s become another passion that I need to share .
