Carolina Arts - Feature Articles November Issue 2005

Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, Features Works by Cindy Weaver

Ginny Lassiter, director of Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, announced the gallery will be featuring new sculptured clay works by Wilmington, NC, artist Cindy Weaver, through Dec. 3, 2005. The show is titled, Natural Growth - In Nature, In Art, In Self - Honoring the Journey.

Weaver is an accomplished artist, exploring and creating art in various media for the past thirty years. She has studied pottery under Hiroshi Sueyoshi and Dina Wilde-Ramsing in Wilmington, and has earned awards from numerous juried art shows and has been the recipient of several art grants. In addition to Sunset River Marketplace, her work may be found at Louise Cameron Art Museum.

About the show, Weaver said, "To me, honoring something is really the simple act of giving something the time it needs to be seen and appreciated. In my life, one of the most worthy things to honor is Nature. I am endlessly fascinated, and find inspiration for my art, by walking in the woods and looking at the incredible beauty. Leaves, twigs, rocks - what in Nature isn't inspiring? I seek to honor them all by creating sculptural pieces that combine a memory of their beauty, along with my own creative interpretations."

Weaver adds, "The majority of my forms also honor being female, being a mother. My pieces are soft in form, and show movement. The way the clay moves around a stick and incorporates it into the form might remind the viewer of the subtle ways we can cooperate in life, grow, learn, and teach, without losing ourselves. You might also see the mother-child connection in my work, along with the aspects of growth that comes from that deep, precious relationship. That is where honoring the Self comes to play. I honor and am grateful for all that I have learned along the way, and I try to tell my story of personal growth through my work."

In viewing Weaver's work, one notices the asymmetric balance in her pieces. According to the artist, this is an expression of the challenges in our lives, a reminder that we can keep our centers and grow more uniquely beautiful as our own life stories unfold. Weaver generally leaves her art pieces unglazed. She smokes each one outside until it achieves the look she seeks. Timing, process and finish vary from one piece to the next. Each one is then buffed with a museum quality archival wax to a natural glow. The color and texture of the buffed surfaces are inspired by stones, weathered wood, seashells, marble, leather and bird eggs.

Lassiter said, "Cindy's pieces are very tactile. Visitors to the gallery are drawn to touching and holding the smaller pieces. I personally find her sculptures to be a calming influence in the gallery. They're almost spiritual in nature."

Sunset River Marketplace is a 10,000 square-foot gallery housing the works of more than 200 artists - all from either North or South Carolina. The eclectic gallery showcases high quality work in virtually every genre. Since opening in 2002, it has become an invaluable resource for locals and a destination for visitors.
