Artist Statement:
With a BFA from The Columbus
College of Art & Design, I
have practiced my trade for
over 20 years as a commercial
artist & illustrator while
doing business as Studio 49 .
My love for painting &
collage, along with personal
events in my life, finally
lead me to begin "The Joan
Series" in 2001.

"The Joan Series" is an on
going body of work, expressing
a woman's desire to act out
her fantasies using her inner
strength which is depicted as
a box of "Arm & Finger
Bitching Soda".

Joan has recently discovered
her vices, "Joan's
Preservatives", to help her
cope with her struggles as she
begins to face the old baggage
in order to move forward in
her search to find herself.

With my appreciation for
vintage advertising, I've
created each piece as an old
advertisement, with Joan being
represented as a 1960's
housewife, appearing innocent
and sweet with her fake smile,
but when examined more closely
you will find the whimsical to
be more wicked than that.

Hobbies / Interests I love taking old items and turning them into something attractive or functional. I love inventing things. I love cooking and baking, including cake decorating. I love playing golf, which I'm quite good at. I love music and singing. I love power tools and heavy equipment and want to operate them all. But, out of all the things I love, painting is my first love.

Biggest Artistic Inspiration It was while I was in High School in a small town in Ohio. I was a Sophmore and was selected to go to New York City with a hand-full of art driven Senoirs to visit all the art museums for a week. It was then I realized I must have what it takes to pursue an art career.

Why Did You Become An Artist I don't think I ever bacame an artist, I was just born an artist. As long as I can remember, I've always been able to draw and paint with skill beyond my years. Being an artist in both the commercial world and the fine arts world isn't just a career for me...it's a way of life.

Your Personal Biography Cyndi Bellerose-McAfee graduated from the Columbus College of Art and Design in 1985 with a BFA in Illustration. Her work has been exhibited in Columbus, Ohio at Waldo’s on High, Sean-Christopher Gallery and the Ohio Art League. Work has also been exhibited in New York at A.I.R. Gallery and the New York Society of Illustrators.

Ms. Bellerose-McAfee founded Studio 49 Design Studio in 1987 and co-founded Studio 49 Atmosphere Design with husband Lou McAfee in 2004.

The artist has been a part-time elementary art teacher since 2001 and has instructed many art workshops for participants of all ages for over 10 years.

Although Studio 49 and teaching keeps her busy, she follows her true passion; painting. In 2002, Ms. Bellerose-McAfee began her on-going body of work, “The Joan Series”. Inspired by the sorrow and anger following a failed marriage and a toxic relationship, paintings of “Joan” emerged as vintage advertisements, expressing the frustrations and fantasies of an abused woman in a wicked yet whimsical style.
