Your Personal Biography
My interest in art started as a child but was postponed while I worked in a career as a mediator. It's a long story with academic roots in mathematics and psychology, an enjoyable chapter teaching middle school students and a conclusion with work in State government.

I decided to take up painting because it appeared deceptively easy, something any reasonable individual ought to be able to do without too much trouble or effort. How hard can it be?

When I picked up a brush I imagined myself the next, great, soon-to-be-discovered artist. It was only a short matter of time before I would be discovered as ... (pop). That bubble burst early on. and I readjusted my time frame for mastering the medium from instantaneously becoming famous to wouldn't it be nice if someday I could paint a picture.

I've participated in workshops with Mel Stabin, Lou Bonamarte and John Massimino as well as at the Yale Center for British Art when it offered a hands on course in painting in the style of British watercolorist. I find workshops particularly important in learning to paint as they provide artist challenges, help set new goals, and provide a social element to what is otherwise an isolating activity.

We are bombarded with images in our daily lives from the minute we awake each morning until we close our eyes at night. We see them in magazines, on computer and television screens, on billboards, and in ubiquitous advertising. While our other senses are also processing information it can be argued that modern life is disproportionately influenced by the objects in our visual world.

I've concluded that Art is important because it helps us understand our environment and provides a means for viewing the world, and communicating this vision to others. Whether we are successful at painting depends on our perceptive abilities, skill of interpretation, mastery of technique and medium, and our faithfulness to our message and vision.
