Artist Statement:
When I create art, I first consider the volume of the canvas. I think in terms of stationing areas of form and space and of give and take. I then consider what will be the design of the primary forms that will fill those stations. Next, what will be the combination of complimentary and contrasting colors that I will use. Once these considerations have been met, everything else falls into place. Additional considerations arise through the working and re-working of the medium. Questions of smooth and hard edges and thin or thick application rounds out the process. Last, I read the work to determine if it is balanced and if it conveys my overall intended sentiment.
In terms of process application, I use palette knives, brushes, strings, rollers, sponges and almost anything else that is at my disposal. Many of my works combine more than one method of tooling. I do paint over previous works and that is mostly due to my self-admonishment and impatience. Last, I prefer to creat larger works. If find working on a large canvas a more joyful challenge than a small one.
