Artist Statement:
I live in woodlands of central North Carolina, an area which offers great access to a multitude of other artists of various media, not the least of which is a significant ceramics tradition.
As a ceramic artist and Architect with an interest in Archaeology, I explore imagery of encrusted surfaces and forms which simultaneously embody or evoke ancient and present time, and usually appear to have been lifted from ancient tombs. I also enjoy exploring tension of function vs. non-function as (surprisingly, for me) my work has become more sculptural. Overall, I enjoy 'process': finding local clay deposits, developing a workable body, exploring form, and firing various regimes.
Most of my current work is barrel-fired earthenware, using foil saggers with various combustibles and surface treatments, and although I strive to control basics, ultimately the process retains its own magical secrets, so that every piece is a delightful discovery.
It has been said that ceramic folk tend to be mud daubers or pyromaniacs. I am both.
