Artist Statement:
The simple bird feather. It is thin, light, strong, and graceful. No two are just alike. All possess uncompromising beauty whether seen from a distance or studied with intense scrutiny. I find myself connected with and drawn to the organic shapes which compose their sweeping lines. Many defy conventional definitions for coloration with light refracting qualities which are unequaled elsewhere in nature. These are just some of the characteristics which I strive to capture in my work.
I start with a sheet of steel as my base medium because of its pliable nature while being worked and formed, and yet it becomes strong and structurally sound when properly finished. A unique chemical layering technique is employed to give the sculptures a hand crafted, almost wood like quality beneath its surface. This same process makes the surface appear fluid upon closer observation. With sculpture as my canvas, I then mist, spray, and splatter endless layers of exotic paints ending with finishes which shimmer bright like neon saturated with nature’s kaleidoscope of colors.

| Your Personal Biography |
Alan Derrick was born in 1956 in Chattanooga, TN and raised in Huntsville, AL. He studied at the University of Alabama–Huntsville in interior design, graphic arts, and sculpture. Alan went on to have a successful life allowing him the luxury of developing a fulltime art studio with four employees after selling his construction business of twenty years.
Today Alan has a studio adjacent to his home in the mountains of Gurley, AL, outside of Huntsville, where he creates larger than life metal sculptures of the common bird feather.
