Artist Statement:
I grew up around art but the
first time I really looked at
a painted portrait, it was
like falling down the rabbit
hole, everything beyond the
constraints of the canvas fell
away from me. It wasn't
necessary for it to be a
portrait, many pieces of art

Biggest Artistic Inspiration My familly have probably been my biggest source of artistic inspiration, most of my childhood we visited historical sites and museums and galleries around the world and I grew to know the language of art. My only aspiration when I first picked up a paint brush was to paint as well as my father.

Why Did You Become An Artist I became an artist because of "A Portrait of Lady Agnew" by John Singer Sergeant. My Father worked for a long time as a portrait artist and my mother works still as an art teacher, and all of the exposure to art I grew up with made me want with all my heart to be a musician. I thought I was going to be a musician untill I was probably 16, then I saw Sergeant's painting in the Edinburgh National gallery. I'm not sure what happened when I saw that painting, except that I probably fell in love with the subject of the portrait. That's the first time I really understood the impact art had on my life, that a work of art at it's best can make you want to climb into that world. That's when I picked up a brush and finally started really really paying attention.

Your Personal Biography Damian graduated from the University of Northumbria at Newcastle Upon Tyne with BA Honours in Fine art, moved to Charlotte North Carolina (USA) and began working as an artist in Charlotte (June 2000 was a busy month) where he exhibited in many group and solo shows over the following five years. Group shows during this time included the Daniel Styber gallery (October 2000), The Charlotte Artist’s Society Bank of America show (April 2004), The Artist’s Gallery (January 2005). The works produced during this time were largely of a commercial concern and very much driven by environment, although these works were largely realist landscapes or scenes of every day life, Damian views these paintings as surreal.
Damian returned to the UK September 2005 and commenced producing a body of work which continues to evolve. Damian’s work focuses on the dominance of the model over their environment and occasionally their audience. The works avoid being overtly sexual yet maintain a level of intimacy that is challenging.
