Artist Statement for Dianna Dunn

It’s got to glow! Sort of like the smile you like to see on the face of that someone special in your life. Oh, and it’s got to hold your attention long enough to find out how you’re doing…..you know, like that someone special does. Yeah, I know, we’re talking a painting here, but that’s how I think about it. Just like that someone special, there has to be lots of layers of interesting stuff to peak your interest and keep you coming back for more. Thin layers of translucent paint applied over scrumptious textures - I’m thinking painting here, not that special face- is what interests me with each piece. Whether the painting’s subject is something easily recognizable or an abstract coming from my emotions, I love the interaction between myself and the materials used….it truly becomes a relationship. No, not quite as fulfilling as the relationship with that special someone, but my painting relationships definitely have some high points!

So, now you know; a painting is one way I relate to and communicate with people. After all, isn’t communication considered an art form? Whether luminous or muted in color, drawn with subtle or bold lines, something you easily recognize or an image that leaves you wondering; I want each work to talk to you, to make you laugh, to intrigue you, to move some emotion within you.

Gosh, back in our childhoods, the pictures in our first books jump-started our imaginations and helped us understand the world around us. Should that change as we get older? I think not. For me, being an ‘adult’ (well, sometimes I am) just means I get to buy all the crayons and brushes and paints and paper and canvases and markers and…..well, you get the idea…. I ever wanted. For you, it should mean that you still get to look at the pictures first!
