Artist Statement:
I love abstract art because it involves the viewer in the creation process so thoroughly! When you look at a piece of abstract art you make up what it means - you ascribe meaning to the piece - and that is a good thing.
The other thing about abstract art is that, when it's good, it expresses something or things about being human that gets expressed in no other way. The same with jazz, my other passion, as a unique art form that communicates our humanity, uniquely!
My current work involves patterns and symbols - repetition of color, or shape or brush stroke or other technique. It's a challenge, and that makes it engaging for me.

| Your Personal Biography |
I was born in 1948, in Palo Alto, California, home of Stanford University, the Whole Earth Catalog, birthplace of Silicon Valley, the Grateful Dead, psychodrama, the Merry Pranksters and Joan Baez. My family has always been very musical and artistic, as well as scientifically inclined. My father was an aerodynamicist whose hobby was making violins, and my mother was a mathematician, passionately in love with opera and classical music. My two sisters are both classical musicians, one a violinist, the other a pianist.
All my life I have had equal passions for jazz and abstract art.
I've been drawing and painting since I was 12, when I first saw a painting by Jasper Johns. I love abstract art because when it’s good it can put the viewer in touch with who they are beyond their culture, psychology, history or personality.
As an artist I've been greatly influenced by Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Cy Twombly and Richard Gayton, my drawing teacher at The California College of Arts and Crafts.
I have sold approximately 600 paintings and drawings, and have taught drawing, painting and color theory for young and old, both in my studio and in public venues. I have taught drawing and painting to youth at risk in the Mississippi Delta and have taught public school teachers how to teach their students art. I have won awards for my paintings and drawings, and my work is in both private and corporate collections around the world. Over the past 25 years I’ve shown my work in approximately 45 one-man and group gallery shows. I have been on the Mississippi Arts Commission Artist Roster of approved artists for grant-seeking institutions.

As a jazz musician I have performed in the New England area, the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as in Mississippi. I’ve played with Mississippi musicians Eden Brent, John Horton, Knight Bruce, Raphael Semmes, Donnie Brown and many others. My major influences as a saxophonist have been Dexter Gordon, Charlie Rouse, Stan Getz, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Gene Ammons. I have lectured on jazz and the lives and times of jazz musicians for both young people and adults.
I live on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi with my wife Liz (an Episcopal priest), my daughter Sarah, Sam the Welsh fairy dog and a mystery cat named Chutney.
