Artist Statement:
In general, I don't think
people notice or care about
the details of the world
around them. -- Recently, I
read an op-ed piece by Ted
Koppel in which he made a
statement that epitomised
this: "We celebrate truth as
virtue, but only in the
abstract." Of course, Ted
Koppel was talking about the
state of journalism, but I
find that this statement fits
in perfectly with how many
people experience their world
as well.
One of the main priciples of
Buddhist philosophy is the
concept of impermanence.
Nothing lasts forever.
Everything changes. What is
here one day may be gone the
next. Along with impermanence
is the concept of
non-attachment. To attach
ourselves to anything or
anyone is to welcome suffering
when those things or people
are gone from our lives.
Countering impermanence and
non-attachment, is the concept
of awareness. Awareness allows
us to experience, enjoy, and
cherish what and who is here
and now, preserving memory and
adding knowledge.
I am inspired by the ancient
Hindu practice of seeing
without seeing; being without
being; and the Buddhist
practices of contemplation,
cognition, and awareness. My
work is about the constantly
changing landscape,
experience, our perception of
