| Your Personal Biography |
Self-taught after a scientific based education I have often sought to create pieces that could be seen as ancient and magical.
Tales of Merlin, Odin, Khazad-Dum, Valinor; places such as Petra, Newgrange, Machu Pichu and the Great Pyramids have all filled me with a desire to create stones of myth and magic.
I started carving professionally seven years ago after the birth of my first son, i carved largely celtic themes of dragons, spirals and knotwork before working mainly to commission, both publicly and privately. That period revolved mainly around practical pieces for hearth and home before starting to become more and more public based. My public work proper has sponsored an increase in scale with the south of Wales alone boasting over a dozen stones of 2 metres and greater.
Much of this work has involved working with school children by way of public consultation so that there are now many children who can point to a standing stone in their local environment which depicts their own work.
This work has given me a great deal of pleasure and inspiration; best of all being the opportunity to facilitate the children carving the work themselves. The success of this phase has brought me full circle offering the time and investment to start creating spontaneously those forms closest to my heart - fluidity in stone, concreteness in irrationality, metamorphic tribal moments of wonder.
In my next phase i wish to start collaborating with a wider and wider range of creative people and also combining the media of stone, steel and timber to a greater degree. |
