Dorothy Tyor's Artist Portfolio
Welcome to Dorothy Tyor's Portfolio.
I have been a painter for many years, specializing in both portraits and landscapes. A dozen years ago, on a trip to Italy, I became fascinated with medieval manuscripts and, in particular, the use of gold leaf in illustrations. Eager to try this technique, I began to make small illuminated miniatures, using my skills as a portraitist and landscape painter to create my own designs inspired by the art of the middle ages.
Like my medieval inspiration, my miniatures are based on series and themes; months of the year, music, games, etc. Each miniature is a world unto itself. They are created with 23 kt gold leaf, acrylic paint and India ink.
I also create personal Illuminated Letters using the same materials and techniques, incorporating a portrait of the subject and their initials, as well as references to interests and special events. Please see my website - www.richhoursart.com - for examples
My work is on permanent exhibition at the Mamaroneck Artist Guild in Larchmont, NY, Piermont Flywheel Gallery in Piermont, NY and Vantage Point in Chatham, NY.
