Artist Statement for Dorothy Tyor

|
I have been a painter for many years, specializing in both portraits and landscapes. A dozen years ago, on a trip to Italy, I became fascinated with medieval manuscripts and, in particular, the use of gold leaf in illustrations. Eager to try this technique, I began to make small illuminated miniatures, using my skills as a portraitist and landscape painter to create my own designs inspired by the art of the middle ages.
Like my medieval inspiration, my miniatures are based on series and themes; months of the year, music, games, etc. Each miniature is a world unto itself. They are created with 23 kt gold leaf, acrylic paint and India ink.
I also create personal Illuminated Letters using the same materials and techniques, incorporating a portrait of the subject and their initials, as well as references to interests and special events. Please see my website - www.richhoursart.com - for examples
My work is on permanent exhibition at the Mamaroneck Artist Guild in Larchmont, NY, Piermont Flywheel Gallery in Piermont, NY and Vantage Point in Chatham, NY. My work is in private collections in – among other places - New York, Chicago, Boston, Vermont, Florida, Atlanta, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Dallas. My studio is in Ossining, NY.
