Artist Statement:
Early on I was influenced by
the "Hairy Who" and the
Imagists painters of Chicago.
I discovered the works of
Joseph Cornell at this time as
well. Taking the canvas into 3
dimensions just seemed a
natural move for my art
because of those influences.
Cartoon images, Toys,
Fireworks, Christmas,
religion, politics, symbolism,
and patterns are what my
images reflect. I often
incorporate optical effects in
my works to make them seem
visually active. Take a trip
to Candy land my paintings
seem to evolve there. Being
one of the first of the
Saturday morning cartoon
generation certainly
influences the look of my
paintings. Under the colorful
world sometimes lurk darker
happenings. The whimsical
world of my images I hope are
singular. I have worked to
have a singular vision and
paint with a unique approach.
The paintings as art objects
are important to me. I guess I
just like to make unusual
things. Please enjoy my vision
and I hope you are entertained
by it.

Reviews for Eric Ton:

Lumpin Times - Chicago
" Eric Ton's work takes the viewer on a whimsical excursion into symbolically rich and technically masterful paintings and assemblages. Ton is a wizard in the manipulation of perspective, and he's added a few dimensions to the three most of us our familiar with. In "Pleasent Day for a Trinity", he craftily inundate's the surface with contemporary icons: three looming crucifixes, floating clowns, candy canes, dollor bills - the color resembles a children's gameboard. The artist must have a channel to the Great Creator because his work is more than a poignant frolic through rich sufaces sprinkled with our most revered cultural symbols." - Geogianne Scholz

Nit Wit art magazine - Chicago
"Eric Ton's work in particular might sum up the flavor the gallery wishes the public to taste - someone new, responsive to social trends without being "trendy" and with a certain proffesional integrity. his subject while loud and vivid, are in his own words, "secondary to being devices for color and brush studies." The painter is extremely articulate about his character subjects; they bring to mind those in current pop culture novels, while not mimicking anyone in particular. Ton's opening surely will offer a perfect reason to visit The Edge if you haven't already done so." - Cris Blackstone

Winston Salem Journal - Winston-Salem, NC
"Ton satirizes sentimental religious attitudes in his painting "A Pleasant Day for a Trinity", which presents a colorful, candy-coated picture of calvary. The three crosses in the scene are profusely decorated with Valentine hearts, yin-yang symbols and colorful geometric patterns, and they're surrounded by goofy cartoon figures, including flying cupids, carrot munching Easter bunnies, and a fat pig that wears a top hat decorated like a U.S. flag. Ton has successfully intergrated all these symbolic elements and others to create a striking composition." - Tom Patterson
