I find that painting more than any other activity connects the moment I am living to both the past and the future. The images that appear in my work vary, but my interest in the world as it is, and as it feels, has never wavered. Using the moment to paint is participating in the world. To me, the world includes the past, and I am interested in all aspects of history. But even more important, I want to tell the future what we are doing here at this time, in this place, in all the ways that are normal to us now. Our ways are normal only now, however, and throughout history what has interested me most is what we can recognize in our time as well, that is, the aspects of life that remain constant through changing fashions.
