Artist Statement:
My work is multiple layers of ephemera, family photographs, found objects and iconography that are sealed with resin to contain the imaginal space of the story that the images tell. Each piece begins with an image that compels me, a doll’s shoe, a saint card, a photograph of my mother as a child, a character from a favorite children’s book or myth, anything that evokes a visceral response. I am particularly attracted to dichotomous imagery, for example, the juxtaposition of security and fear peculiar to dolls. Then I experiment with the narratives created when that image is woven together with other symbols. I carefully map out each layer, calculating the interaction of colors and considering the symbolic suggestion of each element, its relationship to other elements, and how that will affect the composition and the allegory as a whole.
I explore the potency of imagery and the uniqueness of personal responses to universal symbols and stories.
