Artist Statement:
I am a figurative artist.
The mask imagery in my work serves as a conduit into the depths of identity, ethnicity, humanity and multiplicity in an attempt to expose racial stereotypes. I use folded and draped canvas to reflect the inevitable wrinkles in life. I work with weathered wood and multi-planed canvas to create constructions that will lead the eye to look at human imperfection as a natural and positive force.
Another choice I have made is framing my work to place in context the African-American presence within the larger world, to create images that will inspire the viewer to re-evaluate limited perceptions of African-Americans. To expand our senses, aesthetics and perspectives so that we might see more than the narrow picture, and learn to look and think outside our boxes, is an important goal.
My work is presented as a means by which we are able to examine and place into perspective our differences and similarities, within and outside of our immediate and superficial orientations, and appreciate how variety enriches us.

Recognition for Ragdale Fellow Joyce Owens’ artistic abilities have come from Faith Ringgold, Martin Puryear, Madeline Rabb, art critic Margaret Hawkins who is also an Artnews correspondent, curator John Pitman Weber, and Juumane N’Namdi, gallerist, N’Namdi Gallery, awarding her prizes including Best of Show in national and international juried exhibitions. 3Arts, Chicago Women’s Caucus for Art and the African American Arts Alliance all recently recognized her achievements in the visual arts. Some public and private collections that include her are: the Paul R. Jones, Dan Parker, Patric McCoy, Lisa McDonald, Dr. Robert Derden and Les Payne collections, Mt. Sinai Hospital and Oakton Community College. Her work is in numerous publications, including books, catalogs, and newspapers, and as illustrations. Nationally and internationally exhibited, Owens’ artwork has been shown on 4 continents, Including Monrovia, Liberia and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia at U.S. embassies, featured on two catalogs accompanying the exhibitions and a calendar. Her work was exhibited in Georgetown, Guyana and at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium at the request of Kurt Volker. Owens has exhibited at the DuSable Museum, the Spertus Museum, the Chicago Cultural Center, The Schaumberg Athenaeum Museum and the Koehnline Museum at Oakton Community College in Illinois, the Philadelphia Museum, the University of Pennsylvania Museum and Connecticut College and Yale University. The 2005 Howard University Alumni exhibition featured Owens’ work and included an essay about her. Solo exhibitions at Elmhurst College's Frick Center, the H.F. Johnson Gallery at Carthage College, Wisconsin, Nicole Gallery, Chicago and Concordia University in Illinois, and numerous two-person and group shows including Macy's Department Store in the Stephen Mitchell Collection and at the South Shore Arts in Indiana. The Sun-Times art critic Kevin Nance selected her 2007 exhibition with Preston Jackson at Nicole Gallery, Chicago as one of the most memorable of the year. Other venues for Owens’ work include the Madd Art Gallery in St. Louis, Homewood Studios Gallery in Minnesota, the Butridge Gallery in Austin, TX and the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts in Pennsylvania. The Parish Gallery in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. presented her work with Bobby Sengstacke’s photography. Her work has been shown at the National Black Fine Arts show in New York, Gallery Guichard, Artjaz Gallery in Philadephia and Woman Made Gallery, The Irish Heritage Center and Columbia College’s Book and Paper gallery.. Owens was the featured artist for Columbia College’s DanceAfrica Chicago 15th year. Art dealer, John Martin featured Owens in his annual fine art fair in Chicago as did Gallery D’Estee (Delta Sigma Theta). Owens is a member of the artists’ collective, Sapphire and Crystals, for whom she had been the main curator for the past eight years.
She has served as juror, panelist, consultant and lecturer for various projects and events including at the Art Institute of Chicago, the College Art Association, the Illinois Arts Council, The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, Columbia College and the Hyde Park Art Center and many other juried art shows ans art fairs.
Owens earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from Yale University and a BFA from Howard University. Currently an art professor specializing in drawing and painting, she is the curator of the galleries at Chicago State University.
