| Your Personal Biography |
I am fascinated with capturing people and their lives through my artwork. I strive to capture who they are and their emotions, not just to impose my own feelings through my work. I enjoy the variety of life experiences that my models have encountered and how these have shaped them inside and out.
Beyond light, line, and beautiful pigments, there is so much to think of during the creation of a work. My relationship with the model influences the manner in which I proceed. Who am I painting? Where are they in life? Is it a friend, a lover, a family member (or my ancestry), or a model unknown to me? These questions change how I proceed with my creation.
Many people have influenced me as an artist - teachers, other artists, family and many other interesting and inspiring characters in my life. I have attended several schools and centers for the development of my art career, including John Abbott College and Saidye Bronfman Center for the Arts. Saidye Bronfman was the most influential in my learning. I was able to work with many different models under the helpful eye of professional artist teachers. Their Comprehensive Arts Program (CAP) was excellent, as a counselor was provided to the students for guidance with regard to their works. Working one on one with professional artists was an excellent way to discover different styles and aspects of the art world. I continue to learn from teachers and peers in the artistic community and beyond. The more art and ideas I encounter in the world, the more I develop my own sense of self within my works.
I am working on various projects in my art, exploring more life experiences and new subjects. Of particular interest is creation (pregnancy) with the many physical, emotional and intellectual changes that occur. What does one learn from such an experience? Another important subject for me is my heritage. I have been painting from old family photographs and discovering where I am from, who I am from. It's very thought-provoking to see what their lives were like and who they were. I feel it's very important for these people not to be forgotten. By creating art in honor of these people, I resurrect their characters, interpreting them in my own way. |
