| Your Personal Biography |
Although based in Montreal, visual artist Denise Buisman Pilger is a frequent globe-trotter, gathering inspiration for her urban photo-collages along the way. Exhibiting and selling her work prolifically in North America and Europe over the past several years, her most recent adventure was a trip to Paris to participate in the ‘2011 Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Art’ at the Carrousel du Louvre.
Her creative practice spans more than decade, beginning with several years as a professional graphic designer and art director for print media, both in Europe and North America. This sensibility is reflected in her current body of work both aesthetically and technically. From her home-based studio, she produces city-scapes that are graphic, contemporary and yet, nostalgic.
Originally from the Netherlands, Denise has a Bachelor of Arts in Illustration from Willem de Kooning Academy of Arts in Rotterdam, and continues to pursue creative professional development to stay on top of new techniques and materials. She occasionally offers artist talks and technique classes in her community.
A dynamic on-line presence keeps Denise connected to her family, friends and followers in North America and abroad through her up-to-date website, frequent blog posts and social media activities, making the artist and her work easily accessible.

| Artist Statement |
Denise’s work reflects her love of photography, painting and travel configured into graphic pseudo-realities of everyday life filtered through her own whimsical creative lens. Her tableaux are bustling pastiches of architectural elements and city life, arranged at unusual angles, irregular scale and not necessarily in their true-to-life configuration. Inspired by her globe-trotting experiences, which have been numerous and frequent, her cityscapes are at once recognizable, yet somehow -surreal.
Her creative process involves digital photo manipulation, image transfer, acrylic photo collage, and acrylic paints/mediums, and other innovative techniques. Working in a variety of scale, Denise creates panels that are graphic, contemporary and yet somehow nostalgic. Often her pieces are black and white with minimalist colour accents, while others abound with colour - her visual vocabulary always unique and always authentic.
Denise’s on-going series of city-scapes, entitled Travelling the World, pays homage to some of her favourite places - mostly urban scenes bursting with all that city life involves. Buildings, cars, people, city wildlife, skies, lawns, urban gardens, vendors, road signs, taxis, electrical poles & wires, streets, harbours compete for our attention, as we gaze upon Denise’s unique universes.
Merging many photographs into a singular image, Denise offers a unique impression of the cities she’s visited during her travels – her perspective capturing the urban land-scape as only a traveler could, highlighting the often mundane, yet essential elements that make up the living, breathing and evolving ecosystem of a city.
We can look for a very long time & still discover new things.
