Artist Statement for Ev Hales

Learning to paint is inextricably linked to learning to 'see'. I find that life is made up of moments that are often such a 'blink of the eye' time span and yet such a moment can alter forever the way we look at the world. I see these as the moments I want to capture for ever in paint so that they are there for everyone to see, for my grandchildren to have a glimpse of how life is for me.
It is not sufficient to just record these moments but also to give them a flavour. The vehicle for this is the medium chosen for the visual expression. Often I am working with watercolour and the challenge with this medium is to have it work in such a way that it appears effortless, that the image is flowing onto the paper, the pigment finding its own way to its resting place.
I love colour for all its sublety and vibrancy, all the impossible combinations that add a richness to our visual world.
I enjoy design and how you can alter people's perception of an image by how and where you place it.
Last but not least, line is the energy mark that we use when we move our hands through the air or make a mark in the sand on the beach. Line is the imposssible abstract quality that has energy, movement, direction and weight, such a powerful combination.
My work is a combination of these many facets.
In terms of subject I am as fascinated by the world we build or ourselves as I am by nature in her wildest state. I am comforted bythe fact that i can look at the same kind of sky that Constable saw centuries ago and yet fearful that my great great grandchildren may not be so lucky. I am keen to put down for the future that kind of world I live in for future generations to look at like I do artists of the past... not a photograph but a flavour of my time.
