Never a surrealist myself, the great push towards painting came from Magritte and Dali as well as from the naïf painters Le Douanier Rousseau and Ivan Generalic... but especially the Magritte exhibition in Brussels in 1977 which I would skip classes to go visit ad nauseam and recreated in my notebooks... |

freitas cruz is a european artist [portuguese], born in paris 1956. he has been actively involved in art since 1985. from 1986 to 2000 he worked and exhibited mostly in portugal. see list of selected exhibitions below.
he was a founding member of QUARTA cultural association and in 99/2000 he worked as artistic director of galeria castelo maior, cascais - portugal, where he helped to promote the work of local and cuban artists.
after a year in berlin freitas cruz left for borneo in 2001. here, in the sultanate of brunei, he was a founding member of The Brunei Art Forum:

he was artistic director of empireArt gallery in 004/005 helping to promote the work of bruneian artists and organizing a series of projects bringing together foreign and local artists.
since returning to portugal in 2005 he has become involved in the project Oficina do Desenho [OD] as artist in residence /tutor alongside artists rui aço and fernando vidal:
