Artist Statement:
I nearly uploaded the typical artist's statement, but what the heck- that would be boring.
Suffice it to say that I like to paint, I enjoy it when people like what I've done and doing this for a living would be way cool, but probably isn't going to happen. But in the meantime, I'm painting mostly trains when I can: evenings and weekends.
Trains: I get ribbed a little for painting them, but I like the metal pitting and textures and colorations on the old locomotives. And I'm trying not to paint too many typical train "portraits"—you know, the 3/4 view of the engine pulling the cars.
My next series may focus on current diesel locomotives—after all, who knows how long they'll be around before something supplants them, and they'll be nostalgic, too!...

| Your Personal Biography |
Gary has been a full-time illustrator and graphic designer for over 25 years, but his real passion has always been painting in oils on canvas. His illustration clients have included L.L. Bean, Windows magazine and McDonalds. His commercial work has been shown with the Society of Illustrators and in the Strathmore Paper Graphics Gallery. Gary received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Syracuse University, and studied at Sir John Cass School of Art in London, England.
After painting primarily landscapes for many years, his most recent work reflects his interest in trains, with particular attention paid to the quality of the surface textures and discolorations of metal on the engines.
Gary was raised in New Hampshire and took his first painting lesson from a well-known art teacher at age twelve. When he was thirteen he sold a painting to Academy Award winning actress Myrna Loy, who was in the area performing summer theater. When not creating artwork, he enjoys his friends and family, playing drums and training in TaeKwonDo. He is married and has two children. |
