Artist Statement:
Gerardo Gonzalez-Quevedo, born in Havana, Cuba, emigrated to the United States in 1988 and settled in Miami. He went to New York to study art at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. He returned to Miami and has exhibited his work extensively in traditional and alternative spaces. Gonzalez-Quevedo’s paintings are made by cutting and piecing together various painted fragments, drawings, digital imagery, and fabrics. This method of working is inspired by years of observing his mother and grandmother engage in the process of constructing and sewing clothes by hand. One aspect of the design process that he incorporates in his paintings is the “Tuales”. “Tuales” are rough drafts for the final dress that show evidence of all the steps, corrections, and decisions made during the construction stages. They reveal the history and thought process behind the final piece of clothing. When Gonzalez-Quevedo creates his paintings, he allows the viewer to witness his own thought process involved in the construction of his artwork. In a manner similar to “Tuales”, he layers and juxtaposes memories, everyday images, and elements of the urban landscape in his compositions. ...
