Artist Statement:
Paula D Glaser
I remember looking through my children's adventure books and the family bible and being very impressed by the pictures and paintings that illustrated the story and the religious text. the illustrations in the stories, most of them by Wyeth as I learned later, and the old master paintings were treasures that it didn't seem possible to recreate.
They were their own existence and my first inspiration, though not the last.
I admire not only the illustrations of Wyeth and the classic painters but the use of color and light by the early impressionists and the work done in the early years of the 20th century by the Hudson River painters, particularly the latter, Their use of light and color make the the flat world of the canvas show great depth. They seem to shimmer with light and color as if they were living worlds. There is a realism that is beyond reality in these paintings.
I started drawing with graphite on paper and progressed first to charcoal and then to ink. From drawing I moved on to painting. My paintings are done on gessoed cardboard or paper with a few on canvas board. I used ...

| Why Did You Become An Artist |
An artist has a vision of some thing, from life, from emotion, from imagination, from experience that they want to create. To be able to create a vision that speaks to someone is a small bit of immortality. My goal is to be able to speak to others in this way, to create what someone else can hear.

| Your Personal Biography |
Paula Glaser was born in Kansas in 1953 and was deeply impressed by the illustrations she saw in children's books and in the old master paintings in the family bible. The realization that actual people drew these pictures was astounding to her and to her sister. They began to draw but due to her sister's undoubted talent in drawing then painting, Paula didn't feel she had the talent for art, She would occasionally try to learn how to draw realistically but always felt frustrated in her attempts.
In 2002 she found encouragement from her husband and from a book, " Drawing On the Right Side of the Brain" by Dr Betty Edwards. This book explained how to draw in ways that were easy to understand and showed how to correct the common mistakes that beginning artist usually make. Paula began to practice constantly and began to show marked improvement.
Due to a move to Oregon for health reasons, she was unable to attend art classes until she and her husband moved to Oregon City, OR. She began to attend Clackamas Community College, taking drawing and painting. she also supplemented these courses with a summer course and a correspondence course from Penn Foster.
She and her husband returned to Nevada and settled in Carson City where she is now attending class at Western Nevada College. Her goal is to continue her education in the fine arts, getting her AA then her bachelors degree.
