Biggest Artistic Inspiration The culture of my daughter and myself. We are Eastern Band Cherokee, and we have a long, strong history and tradition to draw from. We both come from a long line of artists, and we do art to honor them and to bring honor to our family.
The porcupine quillwork I do is inspired by the love of my life, Brad, who taught me how to keep this nearly lost art going. It is what brought us together.

Why Did You Become An Artist Like I had a choice...I didn't become, I AM. I love everything about my art, the process, the journey, the frustration. Whoever said art was relaxing has never put their heart and soul on the canvas.
I have a quilled piece in the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, I have participated in the Downtown Cherokee Arts Project with the fruits of my labor on display in front of the Welcome/Visitors Center in downtown Cherokee.
I have an active artist's blog at myspace.com/helensmokermartin, as well as additional photos of my work. Please take the time to visit me there!
