Artist Statement:
The career of artist Sylvia Buehler
The Swiss artist is not easily pigeon-holed. Her skill, which has grown and developed over the years, is seen in a wide variety of techniques and objects in acrylic, oil, gouache, pastel and silk painting, as well as in textiles and sculptures.
In many respects, the artistic career of the 42-year old from East Switzerland is unusual. It began in 1986, when Sylvia Buehler modelled true-to-life figures with great attention to detail. Their artistic value was quickly recognised. In 1994, her work was acknowledged and honoured internationally for the first time when, as one of 650 participants from 13 European countries, she won 1st prize for her "Uhrenmacher" (watch-maker). In 1996, more of her dolls won silver and bronze at “Eurodoll” in Bregenz (Austria).
At one of her first painting exhibitions in 1995 (silk painting), the Swiss biscuit manufacturer ARNI purchased the painting “Appenzeller” to put on tins that were sold to the Far East (Japan). These tins are now traded as rare collector’s items.
Sylvia Buehler has lived and worked for more than 20 years in Herisau, in the canton of Appenzell Outer-Rhodes. In this time, ...

| Why Did You Become An Artist |
Appenzell roots bring art into full bloom
Curriculum vitae - Sylvia Bühler
Autodidact and experimentalist
Although Sylvia Bühler was not born in Appenzell, she has lived there since 1984. She has not only put down roots in the region, but has also been well and truly hit by the Appenzell cultural bug. Her examination of Appenzell tradition is the central theme that runs through her creative work. Sylvia Bühler experiments with landscapes, crafts, the world of Alpine dairying and local customs in her artwork, seeking her own style and refining her techniques.
Inquisitive and hard-working
Driven by untiring creativity and the joy of constantly taking on new challenges, she balances her tasks as a mother, wife and artist. Her uncomplicated manner, her openness and her inquisitiveness not only spur her on, but also inspire other artists. As well as showing her work at various competitions and exhibitions, she organises group exhibitions and brought the AR’t Herisau into being in 2002.
Cosmopolitan and local
In 1988, right at the beginning of her artistic career, Sylvia Bühler enjoyed her first international success with her hand-modelled figures. Her work was also acclaimed in her own country. She won various tenders for roundabouts, and was sponsored by the Appenzell Ausserrhoden cultural foundation as well as the Swiss Consulate for her first exhibitions in New York. Despite all this success, Sylvia Bühler has remained true to her roots.
Bridge builder and taboo breaker
Her artistic examination of Appenzell peculiarities regularly offends some people. As an artist, she has no taboos or limits, even vis-à-vis traditions and customs. She consciously fights for a dynamic, advancing culture. Sylvia Bühler is fascinated by Appenzell tradition, but does not consider this to be untouchable museum-like culture, instead constantly seeking to create links with the present whether through the use of modern material or through the application of the latest visualisation techniques.
Lone warrior with team spirit
Deep down, Sylvia Bühler is a lone warrior who consistently follows her often individual visions and her artistic path without losing focus. Her success and enthusiasm are an inspiration to other artists. And when she comes across like-minded people, she also transmits her concentrated energy into her team spirit. This can be seen in various group exhibitions and the AR't, which has enjoyed many years of success.
