Artist Statement:
Meeting Places
In our postindustrial world, esoteric concepts of time and space have been subjugated by a desire for what is familiar and comfortable, resulting in an vast environment of pedestrian spaces. Ubiquitous architecture and contrived landscaping have standardized the everyday landscape. Living in a world created for our convenience and comfort as consumers has changed our collective awareness of space on a level that is nearly imperceptible in our routine observation.
My photographic representation of these visually ordinary spaces reflects the externalization and impermanence of the infrastructure of everyday life. The tradition of landscape photography allows the photograph to appear as a truthful document. My role as an artist is to apply the conventions of photography in order to create a sense of objectivity to transform this rapidly evolving environment into an artifact for contemplation.

Tourism and travel has taken on a paradox ingrained in the “American” lifestyle. The values of exploration and individualism collide with the curated experience designed for mass audiences. Christine Holtz is a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based photographer and educator. She attended The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, earned her BFA in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design (2000) and an MFA in Imaging Arts from the Rochester Institute of Technology (2002)
Ms. Holtz’s current photographic work addresses the curated experience of tourism and travel in the American lifestyle. Pointing her camera at vacation areas, Holtz’s photographs contrast the conflicting values of adventure and escapism with consumerism and common experience.
Ms. Holtz’s photography has been exhibited and collected nationally. Selected solo exhibitions include Gallery Katz (Boston, MA), James Watrous Gallery (Madison, WI), Photo/Print Gallery (Truckee Meadows Community College, Reno NV), Focal Point Gallery (Minnesota State University Moorhead, Moorhead, MN) Gallery 1101 (Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Carbondale, IL) and SRO Corridor Gallery (Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX)
Ms. Holtz was appointed Associate Professor of Media Arts at Robert Morris University in the fall of 2007, after teaching five years at the University of Wisconsin Platteville
