Artist Statement:
My body of work has been
criticised as being too
diverse in object and idea for
the audience to get a clear
idea of my artistic identity.
My response to that comment:
that is who I am as an artist.
I paint to examine colour and
form; I photograph to capture
memory and reference; I draw
for the sheer freedom of it; I
sculpted to produce objects to
exist with me; I use collage
to create new narratives
through disparate images; I
read art history, theory and
philosophy for the interest
but also because how can one
know where to take one’s art,
if one doesn’t know where it’s
been. Everything is a point
of departure and
experimentation.
Not surprisingly, my
grandmother taught me cross
stitch and started the bug.
These works are a response to
the two extremes of the male
gaze and the perception of
women which has been a subject
for generations of artists.
Historically embroidery was an
craft for lady's of leisure,
particularly the wealthy and
represented the piousness and
innocence of women. When
suitors came it was auspicious
to be 'caught' doing
embroidery. It was also a
