Artist Statement for Patrick Hromas
For seven years he had wanted to merge his occasional dalliances with Photoshop to better plan his paintings. Patrick toyed with photocollaged cards that he gave to his close friends and family. This interest was brought to fruition in making mock ups for his first Mis En Scene painting, The Youths Propose. In fact, Patrick sees the progression of his artworks from when he drew large scale drawings on stretched paper and went under the pseudonym or self-appointed title, Child of Equus. He found that his audience was not as interested in as his drawings as they were in his paintings, besides he had longed to utilize his training at the Canberra School of Art, where he studied with intensity the human figure, easily transposing these skills to that of the Equine figure. Although he had not tackled the human form in oil paints, concentrating on layering his coloured glazes, much like his juvenilia watercolours, it seemed the only logical progression.
Patrick has exhibited most recently at Braemar Gallery in Springwood with OIFAA and the Marian Newman Gallery in Crows Nest. He has also exhibited extensively at the following locations in Sydney and Canberra, amongst others: The Castle Hill Agricultural Show, Rex-Livingston Gallery, The Lloyd Rees Memorial Art Show (twice) and the National Library as an undergraduate student at the Canberra School of Art. He has won three awards, including being highly commended for a drawing shown at The Castle Hill Show. He has also worked as a volunteer for the Art Gallery of NSW in the Works on Paper. His works are in the collection of the National Library of Australia, the Macquarie University, The Australian Alpine Club and individuals in The Blue Mountains, Sydney and Japan.
The artist would like to believe that the journey of Surrealism or indeed Post-Modernism is not over. He also believes that the tastes of his audience have tended towards the technological, and that has merely delayed his dream of being a Child of Equus.
Patrick has been a member of the Springwood One In Five Arts Association, a non-for profit group for people with, or affected by mental illness since December 2010. Patrick is currently saying farewell to his schizo-affective condition, whilst living with his girlfriend and furred/feathered friends. His works may be viewed and purchased (free delivery within Australia for artworks that can be rolled up) from this site.
