Artist Statement:
From the beginning, it has been my intent to look at humanity on a spiritual level, focusing my attention on the Sacred in the Ordinary. Images of movement, change and transformation and a sense of being guarded, protected and nurtured in the transformative process are important to my vision. My understanding of being "guarded, protected and nurtured" does not lead to happiness, comfort and security. Instead, it acknowledges suffering as native to human existence. These visions are pursued within the mid-20th Century understanding of the shallow picture plane, which is particularly well suited to shapes and methods that are natural to iconography & tapestry....

| Your Personal Biography |
Nancy Jackson was born in California. She spent many childhood hours with pencil in hand and knew early that she wanted to make art. She became discouraged in her childhood endeavors when her “messy” drawings were not enjoyed by the adults in her life. Her childhood enjoyment of the smear of graphite or soft pastel was not explored fully until she became an adult, at which time she reveled in the attributes of these media.
Early in her adult life, Nancy moved with her family to the Big Sky Prairie of Montana, living eight years in the middle of vast wheat fields among 350 other human beings in that isolation. At this time that she developed her weaving skills. Just before moving away from Montana, she traveled to the San Francisco Bay Area to study the highly articulate methods of Gobelin and Aubusson (French) tapestry weaving and designing with Aubusson Master Weaver Jean-Pierre Larochette and Painter Yael Lurie.
Shortly after this study experience, the Jacksons moved to Vallejo, CA. Jean-Pierre Larochette and Yael Lurie invited Nancy to serve a three-year apprenticeship, from 1987-90, launching Nancy as a master tapestry artist.
Nancy has also been trained as an egg tempera iconographer by Xenia Pokrovskaya, internationally renowned restorer of 16th century Russian icons; Ethiopian Iconographer Christopher Gosey; and Russian Iconographer Aleksandr Kharon.
Nancy exhibits her work both nationally and internationally. Her work can be seen at www.timshelstudio.com. She is an internationally-recognized master weaver, iconographer, artist and teacher and she lives and maintains Timshel Studio in Vallejo, California, USA.
