Welcome to Jane Kempe's Portfolio.
My visual memory is imprinted with images of the ocean in all its moods. It's flighty, dangerous and alluring. I grew up near a lighthouse. On some nights we'd hear the foghorn. On still nights there'd be the muffled sound of ship's engines. Standing under the lighthouse, watching the ocean swirl around dangerous reefs and rocks, I ponder how it looks underneath the surface - a quiet world full of movement and unseen creatures. On brilliantly sunny days there's clear sea green and indigo layers under blue skies. Water sparkles and white foam bubbles and splashes on clean sand. Sometimes the ocean is a bathtub just waiting to be explored. Cool and soothing it's spiritually uplifting. Yet I never take it for granted because the ocean demands cautious respect.
My earliest memory of painting is at prep school using wax crayons as a resist method with colour washes. I created an underwater scene. The feeling of fun and daydreaming has never left me.
I'm also intrigued with boats and sailing. There something so free about riding over water. And yachts blossom when they set their spinnakers - ideally suited to my fascination with colour and ... |
