Artist Statement
My stone sculptures are mystical in nature. Over the years I have dealt with several themes in stone....masked figures..figures holding symbols..figures with animals. Currently I am, creating floor sculptures of dreamy figures who turn to face you. One section of the body may be marble; the other part is alabaster. The combination of unlike materials in one artform creates a challenge. I like it because it makes the figures dreamlike but at the same time the piece has to work as a unified whole.
In many of my sculptures female and animal forms combine to create an ethereal quality. I am influenced by Greek and Egyptian. Their use of stone emphasizes its permanence and immortality. In “Lady and the Beast” I have a somewhat totemlike figure astride an abstract bear. It is reminiscent of the Egyptian pharaohs shown astride the panther of the underworld.
The motifs come from personal experience. A woman’s head intertwined
with a deer’s face created with real antlers was my attempt to mortalize a dead deer which appeared to be sleeping on the side of the road. My images, sometimes peaceful, sometimes threatening, suggest personal myths. The ... |
