Artist Statement:
Jason Messinger creates ceramic art that straddles the cool allure of pure abstraction and the hot recognition of representation. The artist approaches ceramic tile with a painter's concerns and a sculptor's experience. His multi-tile works are designed to be modular, allowing any configuration and sequence of the tiles. His work pulls the viewer into square windows that look out onto his unique visions of the world.
Messinger's sculptures are solidly present, while expressly fluid. The work explores transformations, of motion made structural. The sculptures change appearance with the viewers' perspective. Each face of the work functions like movements of a dance, with unexpected turns.
