Artist Statement:
Jason Messinger creates ceramic art that straddles the cool allure of pure abstraction and the hot recognition of representation. The artist approaches ceramic tile with a painter's concerns and a sculptor's experience. His multi-tile works are designed to be modular, allowing any configuration and sequence of the tiles. Mounting systems allows the owner to change the tiles, and thus reset the 'narratives'. Using a variety of techniques, the artist makes letters dance in and out of comprehension, re-imagines pragmatically designed utility poles into startling signifiers of organic beauty, turns clock-work gears into constructions of complexity, carves static clay into moving waves and ripples, and transforms simple circles into burning suns. His work pulls the viewer into square windows that look out onto his unique visions of the world.
Messinger's sculptures are solidly present, while expressly fluid. The work explores transformations, of motion made structural. The sculptures change appearance with the viewers' perspective. Each face of the work functions like movements of a dance, with unexpected turns. One side a facade for the other, a mask, a response, to create a circular narrative of motion and stillness, conversation and emotion. The glazes present a range ...

| Your Personal Biography |
The art of Jason Messinger explores the boundary between identity and abstraction. His artwork is certain in its aesthetic quality, yet open in its intrinsic meaning. His signature mega-mosaic grid Tile Murals allow multiple ways to arrange the modular work, resetting the narrative for the viewer, who provides their own interpretation of the images and symbols into open-ended meanings. The artistŐs Sculptures have a strong figurative identity while remaining abstract in inspiration, moving through forms as one walks around them, creating a visual dance of mass and shape. The artistŐs Paintings and Drawings re-imagine the world into patterns and diagrams of movement and color, light and gesture.
A graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Jason Messinger has been a Chicago resident since 1985, and a full-time professional artist since 1995. The artist has work in private, corporate, and public art collections throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. He has received numerous awards for his artwork, and has been recognized in juried shows across the country. Two of his tile murals hang in the Chicago Public Library, Austin-Irving Branch, as well as in corporate collections in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and China.
The artist is represented by over 45 professional Corporate Art Consulting Firms across the United States, Europe and in Hong Kong. He is also represented in Reading, Pennsylvania by the Outsider and Folk Art Gallery, and is the only non self-taught artist in their roster.
The artistŐs studio / showroom in the Cornelia Arts Building in Chicago is open to the public and design professionals by appointment. The artist maintains three blogs, two web sites, an on-line store of artist-designed gift items, and has artwork showcased in numerous gallery web sites. Links to all of these may be found on his main website: JasonMessingerART.com, along with a gallery of his artwork, and downloadable Curriculum Vitae.
In addition to being an artist, Jason Messinger curates group shows of regional artists, and is a professional writer. His writing subjects include critical reviews of art, non-fiction essays, poetry, and fantasy fiction. Collections of his short stories and poetry are available in print and in
