Artist Statement
Jessica Burke
“I don't think art is propaganda; it should be something that liberates the soul, provokes the imagination and encourages people to go further. It celebrates humanity instead of manipulating it.”
-Keith Harring
My paintings are a means of communication. I believe we are a visual culture and our identity is defined by the images we create. My work operates as a documentation of the experience of being human. These images function as the vehicle for the assertion of this cultural identity. I believe there is an inherent power within an image that allows people to relate to each other, themselves and their world through the sharing of a universal visual vocabulary.
