Artist Statement for Carol Moore

I am an artist and life long resident of the historic Indiana town, Vincennes. I have been painting for over 30 years, but more seriously in the past 14. Still Life and portraiture are a particular interest of mine and I love color. Most of my work features a bold use of color. Although the paintings on display in the portfolio are acrylic I also work in oils. I have done some watercolor and have a strong background in drawing.

I have a degree from Vincennes University in Modern Foreign Language and have taken many art classes there. VU is a National Association of Art and Design Schools accredited school. I have also studied art at the University of Southern Indiana.

I worked as a production painter for wildlife sculptor Jules Bouillet for two and half years. There I learned to airbrush and handpaint on the resin-cast ducks produced at Shaker Prairie Shop.
At the present time, I and my neighbor and friend, Anita Billings, do a lot of "temporary" art. This is done on store front windows as advertising for a business or decoration for some of our downtown events - such as the Christmas Stroll and the Watermelon Festival. We also do interior murals and participate in many fund-raising art projects.

In 2004 Anita and I created the first "Vincennes" Santa painting. It featured a Santa-like figure, dressed as a French voyageur leading a pack reindeer towards Grouseland. Grouseland, the historic home of President William Henry Harrison (who was first governor of the Northwest Territory),was celebrating its 200th anniversary. The painting was sold and also done up in an edition of 200 prints. All of which were sold. In 2005 we released our second "Vincennes" Santa. He is featured in front of the old Pantheon Theater on the corner of 5th and Min in Downtown Vincennes. The St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Vincennes was featured in the background of our 2006 painting - St.Nicholas visits the Old Cathedral and this year another French voyageur Santa with red capote and black toque stands before Old Fort Sackville on the banks of the Wabash. In his hand he holds a crystal ball with the image of the modern-day George Rogers Clark Memorial that occupies the place of the old fort.

In April of 2006, Blue Moon Gallery & Studios opened its doors in historic, downtown Vincennes. This is my and my friends first venture into the business world. Our small gallery which features work by area artists as well as our own plus a line of art supplies is gradually taking off and I have high hopes for its future.

It is one of my goals to raise the awareness of the arts in my community and its surrounding area. As I, along with Anita Billings, became a Co-President of the Northwest Territory Art Guild this past year we have been given an opportunity to achieve some of these goals.
