Artist Statement:
Jef Van Campen rewards the
viewer with a nearly
abstract/expressionist use of
color and he paints with the
spontaneity of his experience.
Using impressionistic
techniques and expressive
symbols, he conveys substance
and atmosphere with the
minimal means that have become
his trademark.

If atmosphere is a recurrent
theme, then the River Scheldt
is never far from Antwerp, nor
Van CampenÕs work. The poetic
and seemingly prosaic aspects
all seem to inspire him. He
often uses the Scheldt as an
emptiness, a background for
ships, which move as if
refugees, pilgrims or even
heroes beginning journeys into
the unknown. Symbolizing the
riverÕs link to the world, he
can intrigue you with the
geometry of a quay, a
container ship or gigantic
locks, the sky Š and a mere
patch of water. In other work
the river is reduced to
splashes against concrete
structures or ripples onto
reed-lined banks.

Van Campen, generally not
talkative about his paintings,
does talk about what is in
them. He offers this detail as
the way he seeks to draw
beauty from the here and now,
an effort to reach for the
essence of things and people.

Not surprisingly, as one of
BelgiumÕs ...
