Artist Statement for John Gamache

statement

I have always been an artist, with no choice in the matter. As a toddler I drew on the walls of the house, as a youth I filled sketchbook after sketchbook, and as I reached adulthood, my calling became clear—to share my inner visions through my artwork. Again, I had no choice...

My passion is for the earth and its beauty, intermixed with elements of the past. Old, cast-off objects —run-down barns, abandoned houses, old cars in a field—I infuse with new life through my paintings and mixed media works. When I create such a piece, I wish to convey the emotions I feel for the scene or object to the viewer. I want them to be an active participant in my joy, my melancholy, my humor, my nostalgia. Through my textures, layers, earth-tones, and choice of images, I strive to convey these feelings. To me, the process of creating a work is transcendental; I am completely lost in the making,
I am part of each piece.

My two-dimensional works are produced with acrylic or oil paints on canvas, panels, or wooden objects. Often, the wooden objects are old, cast-off pieces themselves, found while rummaging through old barns or antique stores. My three-dimensional painted works are scenes composed of wood, stone, and plexiglass, with small human and animal figures. They are semi-abstract, yet
infused with a sense of nostalgia.
